GOVERNMENTAL

In 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) are aligning their priorities to advance healthcare delivery and improve outcomes for beneficiaries. CMS continues its commitment to enhancing the quality of care, reducing costs, and promoting equitable access to healthcare services. Emphasizing a patient-centric approach, CMS prioritizes initiatives that address social determinants of health, fostering a holistic model that recognizes the diverse needs of individuals.

Simultaneously, CMMI is driving innovation with a focus on value-based care models. Their priorities for 2024 include expanding and refining existing alternative payment models (APMs) to incentivize providers to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care. CMMI is also dedicated to accelerating the adoption of digital health technologies and interoperability to enhance care coordination and patient engagement. Additionally, there is a concerted effort to address health disparities through targeted interventions and community-based initiatives, aligning with broader healthcare equity goals.

Healthcare Trends

Financial Models
A significant trend in the healthcare landscape is the consolidation of primary care practices into risk-taking Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). This strategic shift reflects a growing recognition of the benefits derived from collaborative and coordinated care models. By consolidating under ACOs, primary care practices aim to share financial accountability for patient outcomes, driving a focus on preventive measures and cost-effective care. This trend not only promotes better care coordination but also positions healthcare providers to navigate the complexities of value-based reimbursement models. The consolidation into risk-taking ACOs signals a proactive response to the evolving healthcare landscape, fostering improved patient outcomes and operational sustainability.

AI
AI in healthcare will evolve to streamline diagnostics, enhance personalized treatments, and improve operational efficiency. AI algorithms will continue to analyze vast datasets, aiding in early disease detection and treatment optimization. This integration will empower healthcare professionals, driving innovation and ultimately leading to improved patient outcome

Clinical Forecasting

A notable trend in primary care involves the acquisition of practices by healthcare disruptors. These entities, often innovative tech-driven companies, are hoping to reshape the traditional healthcare landscape by introducing novel technologies and streamlined services. The acquisition of primary care practices by disruptors signals a shift towards new payment models and design hoping to success financially by patient-centric, technology-enabled models that prioritize convenience and accessibility. This trend reflects a broader industry movement, challenging traditional healthcare norms and fostering a more dynamic and responsive approach to meeting the evolving needs of patients in the modern era.
Technology-first healthcare startups will also continue to grow in 2024, albeit at a slower pace than throughout and post-COVID. These new entrants will focus on leveraging innovations like AI, telemedicine, and digital health platforms. The aim being to enhance patient engagement, streamline healthcare processes, and deliver personalized solutions. The challenge will continue to be the financial models which support this type of care. A large area of current growth is in out of pocket, subscription based or point of care models which provide ready access to specific niches of health at a cash price. The sustainability of these models and long term value continue to be an industry question.
